00:00:01.423 --> 00:00:06.232
Welcome to the award-winning Champions Mojo hosted by two world record-holding athletes.

00:00:06.232 --> 00:00:13.766
Be inspired as you listen to conversations with champions and now your hosts, kelly Palace and Maria Parker.

00:00:17.379 --> 00:00:20.690
Hello friends, welcome to the Champions Mojo podcast.

00:00:20.690 --> 00:00:26.871
I am your host, kelly Palace, and, as usual, I am with my co-host, maria Parker.

00:00:26.871 --> 00:00:29.768
Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it's great to be with you here today.

00:00:29.768 --> 00:00:42.270
Yes, and Maria, this is a special edition of Champions Mojo from the pool deck and we have a great interview for you today.

00:00:42.270 --> 00:00:46.070
It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful.

00:00:46.720 --> 00:00:47.902
Yeah, and we.

00:00:47.902 --> 00:00:53.654
I wasn't there, but I was able to listen to the interview and some great takeaways.

00:00:54.159 --> 00:00:57.308
Yeah, we hope you'll stick around and catch the takeaways.

00:00:57.308 --> 00:00:58.563
And here we go.

00:00:58.563 --> 00:01:05.605
We are at an on-deck inspiration, but I'm actually going to change it and say it is an on-road inspiration.

00:01:05.605 --> 00:01:15.563
My hubby and I did a 5K this morning and I ran into this beautiful 81-year-old world record holder running next to me and Angela Stobb.

00:01:15.563 --> 00:01:16.948
Welcome to Champions, mojo.

00:01:16.948 --> 00:01:18.905
Thank you, it is really my pleasure.

00:01:18.905 --> 00:01:26.506
What we like to talk with our champions that are on our show is just what motivates you to do the things you do.

00:01:26.506 --> 00:01:28.164
So I give you a little bit of background.

00:01:28.164 --> 00:01:31.432
First, angela has got 16 national titles.

00:01:31.432 --> 00:01:34.748
This summer she's traveling to Sweden for the world championships.

00:01:34.748 --> 00:01:38.608
She's just got many, many accolades, which I can put in the show notes.

00:01:38.608 --> 00:01:43.588
But she is 81 years old and you did not start running until you were 57.

00:01:43.588 --> 00:01:45.525
Tell us how that happened.

00:01:45.939 --> 00:01:46.843
My daughters.

00:01:46.843 --> 00:01:48.989
I was a hospital administrator.

00:01:48.989 --> 00:01:52.308
All my family had died of heart disease or diabetes.

00:01:52.308 --> 00:01:58.212
Two of my daughters came to me and said mom, slugs die, you have to get exercise.

00:01:58.212 --> 00:02:04.123
And so the one that's here today taught me how to run, and the youngest one taught me how to swim.

00:02:04.123 --> 00:02:10.598
And then they took me to triathlons so I would be a part of a team and made me run.

00:02:10.598 --> 00:02:12.205
And they did the biking and the swimming.

00:02:12.205 --> 00:02:20.183
And then I got hooked, because way back then, that's 30-some years ago, there weren't many 57 or 60 year old women.

00:02:20.183 --> 00:02:30.271
And then on my 60th birthday, I did the Mickey marathon with Mickey, because it was his 100th birthday, and they gave me a big badge and I had the most fun.

00:02:30.599 --> 00:02:36.413
The only problem was I didn't realize how hard it was to walk after you had done how long run.

00:02:36.413 --> 00:02:46.430
And so my husband, as my birthday present, gave me three days, all expenses, disney World, plus the race, plus any souvenirs that I wanted.

00:02:46.430 --> 00:02:52.562
Little did I know I could barely walk the next day to do the parks, but I did and I managed to get a few souvenirs.

00:02:52.562 --> 00:03:04.543
And I called my grandson, who then was just a small tiny, and I said Jay, guess what grandma had 22,000 people at her birthday party and he said wow, grandma.

00:03:04.543 --> 00:03:08.131
And his smart alec father said after how many gave her presents.

00:03:08.131 --> 00:03:16.086
And I said you tell your smart alec father that everybody hugged me and said congratulations and happy birthday, and so that was a gift in itself.

00:03:16.086 --> 00:03:20.188
And I have a motto that you might be interested in for your old cooks.

00:03:20.188 --> 00:03:27.223
My motto is and you can say Angela said it, it's not how old you are but how you are old.

00:03:28.170 --> 00:03:29.332
Yeah, I love that.

00:03:29.332 --> 00:03:30.014
I love that.

00:03:30.014 --> 00:03:30.596
That's beautiful.

00:03:30.596 --> 00:03:33.603
So how do you train for these events?

00:03:33.603 --> 00:03:35.837
So today was kind of an over distance for you.

00:03:35.837 --> 00:03:39.270
There was a 5k training run, run, walk in a normal week.

00:03:39.349 --> 00:03:47.419
How does an 81 year old train I actually only run Three days a week, and then I do how long, how far on those three days?

00:03:47.600 --> 00:03:48.342
Oh, it's all different.

00:03:48.342 --> 00:04:23.064
I got a coach five years ago when I did my hip in so I have an artificial right hip and the sports medicine guy said you need a trainer so that you're not you're over training and most of what I do is interval training, because on the track I'm the 800 1500er and my 800 track training is 200 wind sprints for two and a half miles and then I also do some upper body and a lot of core and then I do Pilates once a week and then I play pickleball Twice a week and Sundays I take off, unless I have a race and you're hosting in Florida.

00:04:23.064 --> 00:04:30.490
The Southeastern Masters championships are in Gainesville February 11th for US track and field.

00:04:30.490 --> 00:04:42.827
So I'll be coming back down to Gainesville and then coming here and there's a race here, but it's on the day before the Southeast and championships and I don't want to run it and then try to run the Southeastern championships.

00:04:42.827 --> 00:04:44.053
It won't work Well.

00:04:44.254 --> 00:04:45.439
I love your busy schedule.

00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:54.189
Now, one of the things that I asked you on the run but I want to ask you for our listeners is what are these times that an 81 year old woman is running?

00:04:54.209 --> 00:05:06.470
I run a five minute half mile and I run a two minute quarter mile and I only ever ran the 100 once and I really can't tell you what my time was.

00:05:06.470 --> 00:05:11.372
I know it was weighed out in the 30s because I got first place, wow.

00:05:11.372 --> 00:05:31.483
But I only did it because I run with a relay team, a world champion relay team, and I have to run the 100 and the 200 to prove to them that I really can sprint if I have to, because I'm normally a middle-distance runner, and so I run the 100, the 200 just to show them that I can get a fast start and finish.

00:05:32.370 --> 00:05:34.416
Those times are pretty darn respectable.

00:05:34.456 --> 00:05:40.392
I mean that's and the two mile in my world placement was 22 minutes 22 minutes.

00:05:40.413 --> 00:05:41.235
That is so fast.

00:05:41.235 --> 00:05:44.742
So what advice would you give to someone who is it?

00:05:44.742 --> 00:05:45.774
What did you call yourself?

00:05:45.774 --> 00:05:46.800
A slug, a slug.

00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:50.920
What advice would you give to someone who thinks they're a slug and they'll never make?

00:05:50.982 --> 00:05:51.021
it.

00:05:51.021 --> 00:05:53.555
You won't make it if you don't get up and try.

00:05:53.555 --> 00:06:03.759
What my daughter did with me was we have a real long driveway, a 350 foot driveway, and so she made me walk the driveway, walked out, walk up, walk down.

00:06:03.759 --> 00:06:11.362
Then I had to jog up, walk down, jog up, walk down and then jog up, jogged out just that short distance.

00:06:11.362 --> 00:06:32.892
And she did that with me for about two months and then she took me out on the road because my first race was actually a 5k and it was very hilly in North Carolina, and she and her sister ran with me and she ran backwards in front of me cheering me on, and her sister ran beside me Cheering me on.

00:06:33.153 --> 00:06:34.718
They wouldn't let me look at my watch.

00:06:34.718 --> 00:06:43.910
They had my watch and they wouldn't let me look at, and the van to pick up People was in the back and they kept saying mom, you got to hurry up, you don't want to be in that van.

00:06:43.910 --> 00:06:46.435
That would be a highly insulting thing.

00:06:46.435 --> 00:06:53.410
And so my 5k time to that day was 42 and you had a finish in 45.

00:06:53.410 --> 00:06:59.529
I did it in 36 that day, just because they were cheering me on and telling me I didn't want to be in the van.

00:07:00.232 --> 00:07:01.214
That is beautiful.

00:07:01.214 --> 00:07:03.682
So your favorite event is the 800.

00:07:03.682 --> 00:07:04.244
Yes, that's my.

00:07:04.244 --> 00:07:05.990
You're doing the hammer.

00:07:06.672 --> 00:07:08.336
Oh, I'm a throws champion too.

00:07:08.336 --> 00:07:10.560
I do the hammer shot.

00:07:10.560 --> 00:07:16.562
Put discus, javelin and weight, it's the pentathlon and the pentathlon.

00:07:16.562 --> 00:07:24.161
I got third this year, 23 third in the nation, and I go back to defend my title this August in Chicago.

00:07:25.172 --> 00:07:33.105
Besides your maybe your hip replacement, what's been the biggest obstacle in your 81 year old life that you've had to overcome?

00:07:33.105 --> 00:07:34.112
My weight.

00:07:34.413 --> 00:07:43.889
First of all, I have very severe hypothyroidism and every time my thyroid gets messed up, I gain weight and gain water and my legs gain water.

00:07:44.310 --> 00:07:56.163
So I have those compression big, heavy-duty ones that they sell for runners to massage their muscles, and every night I put those on and they massage my muscles but they also drain the water out of my legs.

00:07:56.163 --> 00:08:06.877
And then the other thing is same as with most older people you always have an ache or a pain or you kill so many muscles and you just can't avoid it because you're old.

00:08:06.877 --> 00:08:11.470
But If you let that stop you, then you're stopped.

00:08:11.470 --> 00:08:26.552
And one of the reasons why I go to the sports medicine doctor that I go to is he was a runner and he will never say to me stop running, stop doing everything, don't do anything, because he knows that if I stop I may not get started.

00:08:26.552 --> 00:08:31.526
And the other thing is go slow, don't try to run the 5K.

00:08:31.526 --> 00:08:43.080
First Walk a mile or two, then run a mile and just jog it and just gradually build up those programs that they put in running magazines and online.

00:08:43.080 --> 00:08:46.307
Yes, it's called the couch potato to 5K or something like that.

00:08:46.509 --> 00:08:47.070
Do those?

00:08:47.070 --> 00:08:54.279
Yes, Obviously you have this incredible mindset to wake up and have this thyroidism problem and aches and pains.

00:08:54.279 --> 00:08:55.424
What do you tell yourself?

00:08:55.801 --> 00:08:58.666
I wake up in the morning and I say, thank you, dear God, I woke up.

00:08:58.666 --> 00:09:03.447
And then I get to sit on the side of the bed and I say, thank you, dear God, I can still sit on the side of the bed.

00:09:03.447 --> 00:09:07.150
Then I get up and go to the bathroom and I say, thank you, dear God, everything works.

00:09:07.150 --> 00:09:09.807
And then I say, hey, it's going to be a great day.

00:09:09.807 --> 00:09:11.903
Keep going, and that's what you have to do.

00:09:13.541 --> 00:09:17.051
OK, maria, here are the takeaways on Angela Stob.

00:09:17.051 --> 00:09:25.779
I could not have expected, just by commenting on a USA t-shirt, that this would have turned into such a great interview.

00:09:25.779 --> 00:09:29.490
But Angela Stob was such an inspiration, 81 years old.

00:09:29.490 --> 00:09:30.825
What was your first takeaway?

00:09:31.561 --> 00:09:36.251
I love the interview too, and it just goes to show that everywhere around you there's probably somebody special.

00:09:36.251 --> 00:09:41.993
So if you start a conversation with someone, be on the lookout for somebody really special, and certainly that she is.

00:09:41.993 --> 00:09:48.840
My biggest takeaway from Angela's was just how much her daughters encouraged her and loved her.

00:09:48.840 --> 00:09:51.970
They said, hey, mom, we want you to live a long time and they got her going.

00:09:51.970 --> 00:09:57.628
And for me, having others in your life encourage you, that's how I got started exercising.

00:09:57.628 --> 00:10:01.028
My sister-in-law, my husband, others encouraged me.

00:10:01.028 --> 00:10:09.267
Don't be afraid to encourage and ask your loved ones to start exercising, and you never know where it's going to turn.

00:10:09.267 --> 00:10:10.846
She's turned into a world record holder.

00:10:11.620 --> 00:10:12.424
Yeah, I love that.

00:10:12.424 --> 00:10:16.571
Don't be afraid to encourage people in your life that you love to get off the couch.

00:10:16.571 --> 00:10:20.046
This reminds me of one little stanz of my 93-year-old dad.

00:10:20.046 --> 00:10:28.010
Said on the phone, your father-in-law the other night, he's alone and he was just telling me something that lifts him up was a little stanza.

00:10:28.010 --> 00:10:29.883
He does not know where it came from, but it is.

00:10:29.883 --> 00:10:36.293
I live for those who love me, for the blue skies above me and to do good.

00:10:36.293 --> 00:10:43.138
And that just reminded me of a little bit of what she was saying in that and that's beautiful.

00:10:43.138 --> 00:10:48.519
Yeah, yeah, my takeaway there are many things but I love she said it's not how old you are, it's how you are.

00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:49.745
Oh, I love that too.

00:10:49.745 --> 00:10:51.630
She's very inspirational.

00:10:52.436 --> 00:10:52.960
Thanks, maria.

00:10:52.960 --> 00:10:54.102
Another great one in the books.

00:10:54.102 --> 00:10:55.067
Love you, kelly.

00:10:55.067 --> 00:10:56.149
Love you too, love you too.

00:10:58.379 --> 00:11:01.370
Thank you for listening to the Champions Mojo podcast.

00:11:01.370 --> 00:11:02.705
Did you enjoy the show?
