00:00:01.423 --> 00:00:08.000
Welcome to the award-winning champions mojo, hosted by two world record holding athletes and health life and leadership coaches.
00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:15.980
Be inspired as you listen to conversations with champions and now your host, kelly Palace and Maria Parker.
00:00:17.582 --> 00:00:20.989
Hello friends, welcome to the champions mojo podcast.
00:00:20.989 --> 00:00:27.000
I am your host, kelly Palace, and, as usual, i am with my co-host, maria Parker.
00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.045
Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it's great to be with you here today.
00:00:30.045 --> 00:00:42.524
Yes, and Maria, this is a special edition of Champions mojo from the pool deck and we have a great interview for you today.
00:00:42.524 --> 00:00:46.348
It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful.
00:00:46.990 --> 00:00:52.676
Yeah, i wasn't there, but I was able to listen to the interview and some great takeaways.
00:00:53.179 --> 00:00:56.366
Yep, we hope you'll stick around and catch the takeaways.
00:00:56.366 --> 00:00:57.609
And here we go.
00:00:57.609 --> 00:01:11.000
We are at the inspiration on deck at the YMCA national championships and I am with Sherry Boog, who I am so excited to be with her.
00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:12.811
I've watched Sherry for the last.
00:01:12.811 --> 00:01:13.757
How long have we known each other?
00:01:13.757 --> 00:01:13.980
10 years.
00:01:15.802 --> 00:01:19.128
I've been back to swimming for 14 years so I've been in.
00:01:19.128 --> 00:01:20.088
Masters 14 years.
00:01:20.168 --> 00:01:23.394
Yeah, and so you're a part of one of my favorite teams at St Pete Master.
00:01:23.394 --> 00:01:24.644
We see each other every year.
00:01:24.644 --> 00:01:26.918
we go for those high point towels, we try to go for those high point towels.
00:01:26.918 --> 00:01:33.334
Yes, sherry, everyone on deck is calling Sherry the incredible shrinking woman.
00:01:33.334 --> 00:01:36.000
and Sherry, tell us, how much weight have you lost?
00:01:36.801 --> 00:01:45.209
It's right at 135-140 pounds, since I was about 45.
00:01:45.790 --> 00:01:51.417
So to lose 135 pounds is just so amazing.
00:01:51.417 --> 00:01:52.317
How did you do it?
00:01:52.317 --> 00:01:53.358
What was the motivation?
00:01:53.358 --> 00:01:54.000
How did this whole thing start?
00:01:54.900 --> 00:02:01.552
I know part of the motivation for me was I knew I wanted to get back to my normal size and I was struggling with it.
00:02:01.552 --> 00:02:02.993
I was in the gym four days a week.
00:02:02.993 --> 00:02:04.376
I was in the pool four days a week.
00:02:04.376 --> 00:02:09.525
I was still succeeding at swimming, but not where I knew I could be, because I had been a swimmer before.
00:02:09.525 --> 00:02:12.751
I knew where I should be and I knew what my body was telling me.
00:02:12.751 --> 00:02:14.133
So you have to listen to your body.
00:02:14.133 --> 00:02:16.979
That's the biggest thing is listen to your body, understand it.
00:02:16.979 --> 00:02:22.048
I finally after my mom passed, unfortunately in 2019, i did get down.
00:02:22.048 --> 00:02:31.883
I lost 40 right then, but I couldn't break that 300 and I was sitting at 300 pounds in the gym, hitting the water and doing, and doing and nothing was happening And about.
00:02:31.883 --> 00:02:43.960
I want to say about a year and a half ago, i finally found a doctor that wanted to sit down and talk to me, sat down and talk to me for two and a half hours, said he thought he knew what it was, and we found out that my hormones were out of balance.
00:02:43.960 --> 00:02:55.292
We found out that my other hormones were in line, but my testosterone was almost three times what a woman should have, and at that moment he knew I would never lose the weight if we did not get at the testosterone under control.
00:02:55.292 --> 00:02:58.695
And since I've been with him I've lost another 95 pounds.
00:02:58.695 --> 00:03:09.979
So today I am now under 200 pounds, which to me was the biggest goal, and we're going to shoot for another 20 to 30 pounds and try to get my body back in line.
00:03:10.200 --> 00:03:15.614
And swimming has been probably the best thing for me, because I see myself every day.
00:03:15.614 --> 00:03:17.739
I see myself in different suit sizes.
00:03:17.739 --> 00:03:19.723
I started in a 44 tech suit.
00:03:19.723 --> 00:03:22.831
I'm down to a 36, which to me is like amazing.
00:03:22.831 --> 00:03:24.235
I still don't believe it.
00:03:24.235 --> 00:03:26.000
I still see the large girl.
00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:27.002
I do.
00:03:27.002 --> 00:03:28.286
I look in the mirror in their days.
00:03:28.286 --> 00:03:29.650
I still see the large girl.
00:03:29.650 --> 00:03:35.688
I keep pictures of it on my phone to inspire me to keep going, because I know where I can be.
00:03:35.688 --> 00:03:42.000
And then I look at my times and I had personal bested this one meet in the 500, the 200, the 100.
00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:46.204
And my split in the 50 yesterday and the relay was a metapersonal best.
00:03:46.283 --> 00:04:01.493
So It's when you do stuff like that that you know that you're coming back, you know that you are who you're supposed to be And it's nice to know that your friends see you on deck and they come up to you and they give you the hug and they're like you're going to do it, keep going.
00:04:01.493 --> 00:04:12.978
And I think that's been the biggest thing is having a swimming family behind you and knowing that swimming family is not going to let you not succeed, no matter where you are in the rankings, that doesn't matter.
00:04:12.978 --> 00:04:19.370
It's your individual success And I think that's what keeps me motivated the most, and I want to motivate others.
00:04:19.370 --> 00:04:22.230
You don't have to be in the top three, you don't have to be in the top 10.
00:04:22.230 --> 00:04:28.309
My gosh, i'm like sitting at 12th and most everything I do, but I'm still hitting my personal best.
00:04:28.309 --> 00:04:30.331
So every swim is my swim.
00:04:30.331 --> 00:04:41.413
I do it for myself And I think that's the biggest drive in knowing that you've got your family behind you And it's just great friends that are behind you, motivating them every day.
00:04:42.115 --> 00:04:45.432
Yeah, and I see this scene really close and I see what needs.
00:04:45.432 --> 00:04:47.870
What does that team mean to you?
00:04:47.870 --> 00:04:49.732
What are the St Pete Masters mean to you?
00:04:50.646 --> 00:04:50.908
They've.
00:04:50.908 --> 00:04:53.235
Actually it's like a surrogate family and it really is.
00:04:53.235 --> 00:04:58.377
And I think you've always got different friends and different types of friends with any swim team.
00:04:58.377 --> 00:05:04.129
But I think what really is, you find who your true friends are and you find out who really cares about you.
00:05:04.129 --> 00:05:11.310
And it's not just my St Pete Masters friends, it's friends like you, it's friends like other people in Palm Beach And it's all throughout the state of Florida.
00:05:12.165 --> 00:05:27.973
And when I started swimming, scary thing is I was getting beat by 70 year olds and I made really good friends with Pat Tolman, joni Campbell, martha Henderson, joyce Hutchinson from the villages And I'm like you know what one day I'm going to beat you guys and they're like go for it.
00:05:27.973 --> 00:05:32.475
And that was very inspirational to me was knowing that they wanted me to beat them.
00:05:32.475 --> 00:05:36.732
They didn't want me to always be in the first heat, they didn't want me to always be in the slow heat.
00:05:36.732 --> 00:05:39.072
They were like come on, you can beat us, you can beat us, you can beat us.
00:05:39.072 --> 00:05:44.906
And when I started taking them down, it was the hugs that I got from them, even telling me you know what?
00:05:44.906 --> 00:05:47.935
you beat me today and I'm flat, do it again.
00:05:47.935 --> 00:05:50.793
And now one of them actually comes up, calls me your pace car.
00:05:50.793 --> 00:05:53.610
So it's really fun, i become the pace car.
00:05:53.610 --> 00:05:54.889
They were my pace car.
00:05:56.166 --> 00:06:00.656
So, it's really nice to still have that camaraderie, even with them in their 80s and 90s now.
00:06:01.036 --> 00:06:04.310
And it's just And we didn't talk about your age, but you're 60.
00:06:04.451 --> 00:06:05.033
I'm 59.
00:06:05.052 --> 00:06:05.615
59.
00:06:06.565 --> 00:06:10.004
So I want to just go back a little bit on wishing.
00:06:10.004 --> 00:06:12.072
Is your testosterone too high or too low?
00:06:12.564 --> 00:06:13.428
Three times the height.
00:06:13.428 --> 00:06:15.913
It was three times what a woman should have.
00:06:15.913 --> 00:06:16.446
So I was.
00:06:16.446 --> 00:06:18.091
I am very, still very hot.
00:06:18.644 --> 00:06:19.487
And how does that?
00:06:20.009 --> 00:06:21.634
heat one from losing weight.
00:06:21.634 --> 00:06:26.956
Apparently it drives our body differently because women's, we use our hormones a lot different.
00:06:26.956 --> 00:06:32.595
We use our estrogen and different things And even going through the change, one would have thought it would have lowered.
00:06:32.595 --> 00:06:42.728
But apparently my pituitary gland decided that I'm not just going to mess with your thyroid, i'm going to mess with your testosterone too, and it's normal And we've done all the tests on it.
00:06:42.728 --> 00:06:46.858
But my body just generates that much testosterone.
00:06:46.858 --> 00:06:55.526
So now, medically, we've got different drugs and we've done different levels of drugs And from them I'm losing the weight and the testosterone is finally starting to come down.
00:06:55.526 --> 00:06:59.475
But we think the weight, if we can get it off, then maybe we can work the other.
00:07:00.564 --> 00:07:09.886
So if you were going to encourage someone that needed to lose 100 pounds or 50 pounds or 150 pounds, what would you tell them to start with First?
00:07:10.125 --> 00:07:13.514
I would say find the doctor that's going to listen to you, because you know your own body.
00:07:13.514 --> 00:07:22.935
Second, have them run every damnit of blood work you can do and make sure that you get everything tested and make sure that they actually monitor you and listen to you.
00:07:23.144 --> 00:07:25.389
Find somebody that's going to listen Oh awesome.
00:07:25.389 --> 00:07:27.593
So I know you're swimming, getting ready to swim.
00:07:27.593 --> 00:07:32.326
The last thing I like to ask from a spiritual, fun point of view what is sharing?
00:07:32.326 --> 00:07:34.141
What do you feel when you dive in the water?
00:07:36.136 --> 00:07:38.283
Oh gosh, it's almost euphoric for me.
00:07:38.283 --> 00:07:43.541
Every time I dive in, I look at that black line and I'm like you know what I'm going to beat myself today?
00:07:43.541 --> 00:07:48.403
It's me against the clock, It's me against the black line And I'm the only one that can beat myself.
00:07:48.403 --> 00:07:50.723
I try to strive and bake it better every day.
00:07:51.718 --> 00:07:52.422
Thank you so much.
00:07:52.422 --> 00:07:55.725
Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us and sharing your journey.
00:07:55.725 --> 00:07:57.079
Yeah, I appreciate it.
00:07:57.161 --> 00:07:58.338
Thanks All right, thanks All right.
00:07:59.495 --> 00:08:01.295
Stay tuned for the takeaways.
00:08:43.649 --> 00:08:47.793
So Sherry Bogue is such an inspiration.
00:08:47.793 --> 00:08:48.436
Oh my gosh.
00:08:48.436 --> 00:09:00.166
It's such a joy when in one's everyday life you can be inspired by people that you see here and there, that just touch your life here and there.
00:09:00.166 --> 00:09:08.457
And Sherry has been showing up at Master's Meets, as I have for the last 10 years Watched Sherry.
00:09:08.457 --> 00:09:11.842
People are calling her on deck, the incredible shrinking woman.
00:09:11.842 --> 00:09:23.562
I've seen her and have loved connecting with her story and just watching this incredible champion, the willpower, the perseverance.
00:09:23.562 --> 00:09:35.600
What she's done has inspired me And I just thought it was a great story to share on Champions Mojo And Sherry is amazing as a swimmer and a champion And I loved chatting with her.
00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:37.339
Maria, what did you get out of this?
00:09:37.339 --> 00:09:39.264
listening to Sherry's interview?
00:09:40.254 --> 00:09:42.423
I mentioned with you to you earlier.
00:09:42.423 --> 00:09:49.244
I just found Sherry's interview inspirational and approachable for me as a new master swimmer.
00:09:49.244 --> 00:09:55.576
She's not setting national or international records, but she loves swimming, heard.
00:09:55.576 --> 00:10:06.604
The story of her weight loss is very, of course, inspirational, but also just the story of how supported she is by her swimming community and how swimming has just been there for her through this journey that she's been on.
00:10:06.604 --> 00:10:26.846
But I think one of my major takeaways is something she said about her weight loss is that she finally found a doctor who would listen to her, and so my takeaway from this is, if you have a problem and you have a medical issue or some kind of a problem, find someone who will listen and who will help you And it's worth it.
00:10:26.846 --> 00:10:38.902
She finally found a doctor who did the blood work, who found the problem, and now she's succeeding in her weight loss and feeling healthy and very inspirational And apart, it's just I love what she said.
00:10:38.902 --> 00:10:42.244
Like I'm not, i'm finally being some of these seven year old.
00:10:43.998 --> 00:10:44.600
We love that.
00:10:44.801 --> 00:10:47.160
Yeah, I'm sure that's where I would be.
00:10:47.160 --> 00:10:54.256
But she said I come into well every time, but I'm getting personal best and that's enough for me And I thought, yeah, okay, I could do that.
00:10:54.256 --> 00:10:54.878
I love that.
00:10:54.878 --> 00:10:55.538
Thank you, Sherry.
00:10:55.859 --> 00:11:00.426
Yes, and this is master swimming, it's all, it's all fun, very good, all right, maria, love you.
00:11:00.426 --> 00:11:01.547
Love you, kelly Bye.
00:11:04.315 --> 00:11:05.414
Thank you for listening to the Champions Mojo podcast.
00:11:05.414 --> 00:11:06.359
Did you enjoy the show?
00:11:06.359 --> 00:11:17.759
