Be inspired as you listen to conversations with champions and now your host, kelly Palace and Maria Parker.
00:00:18.422 --> 00:00:21.000
Hello friends, welcome to the champions mojo podcast.
00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:27.954
I am your host, kelly Palace, and, as usual, I am with my co-host, maria Parker.
00:00:27.954 --> 00:00:30.870
Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it's great to be with you here today.
00:00:30.870 --> 00:00:43.000
Yes, and Maria, this is a special edition of champions mojo from the pool deck and we have a great interview for you today.
00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:47.000
It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful.
00:00:47.801 --> 00:00:49.003
Yeah and we.
00:00:49.003 --> 00:00:54.734
I wasn't there, but I was able to listen to the interview and some great takeaways.
00:00:55.240 --> 00:00:58.429
Yep, we hope you'll stick around and catch the takeaways.
00:00:58.429 --> 00:00:59.671
And here we go.
00:00:59.671 --> 00:01:21.027
It's another on deck, inspiration from the series number two long course meet in Richmond, virginia, and I am with Jason Somboda, who is a longtime master swimmer and also a urologist and just happens to have a son who is on our national team for open water and his name is Nathan.
00:01:21.027 --> 00:01:22.114
But we're talking to Jason.
00:01:22.114 --> 00:01:23.000
Hello to you, jason.
00:01:23.683 --> 00:01:25.650
I am 45, almost 46.
00:01:26.111 --> 00:01:28.000
Hey, jason's 45, so how was your meet?
00:01:29.281 --> 00:01:29.683
It was good.
00:01:29.683 --> 00:01:32.989
It was my first real experience with long course meters.
00:01:32.989 --> 00:01:35.614
I've done more short course, so it was interesting.
00:01:36.701 --> 00:01:38.909
And how long have you been master swimming?
00:01:39.462 --> 00:01:43.000
I've really been swimming for just over a year with the group here.
00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:49.000
I have some swimming experience in the past, but really with Nova Masters it's been about a year and two months, three months.
00:01:50.368 --> 00:01:51.899
Wait, you swim for the great Mark Kutz.
00:01:52.783 --> 00:01:53.947
I do indeed.
00:01:54.543 --> 00:01:56.737
The man, the myth, the legend as we call him.
00:01:56.778 --> 00:01:56.918
Yes, yes.
00:01:57.240 --> 00:02:01.671
So what is your training schedule being a busy doctor?
00:02:02.641 --> 00:02:07.980
So Masters really fits in really well early morning, getting it done before the day starts.
00:02:07.980 --> 00:02:17.366
So I usually do four days a week Mondays and Tuesdays, wednesdays I take a little bit of a rest, and then Thursdays and Fridays I will do some cross training and other stuff.
00:02:17.366 --> 00:02:19.991
But I found swimming to be really the sweet spot.
00:02:20.801 --> 00:02:26.612
I did peak at your times through USMS database and you're pretty darn fast for just swimming for a year.
00:02:26.612 --> 00:02:28.263
What kind of goals do you set?
00:02:28.263 --> 00:02:32.932
And you know you're a 45 year old dad and doctor and what is master swimming.
00:02:32.932 --> 00:02:36.049
How does that fit into your life and what goals do you set to be fast?
00:02:36.931 --> 00:02:38.335
So I was a competitive athlete.
00:02:38.335 --> 00:02:41.081
I grew up as a competitive soccer player.
00:02:41.081 --> 00:02:54.123
It took a lot of toll on my joints, on my body, and so I've just channeled that competitive energy into the pool and just trying to literally go with the flow and learn stroke techniques.
00:02:54.123 --> 00:02:56.817
Mark will yell at me every now and then.
00:02:56.817 --> 00:03:03.848
He doesn't yell all the time, well, maybe he does but uh, he bellows and sings, yes, but nonetheless he refers to me as Doc.
00:03:03.848 --> 00:03:06.795
He'll say hey, doc, when you do your butterfly, you got to do it this way.
00:03:06.795 --> 00:03:09.823
Just a little technique things that I never really knew.
00:03:09.823 --> 00:03:17.050
So focusing on that and getting with the flow and learning more about distance swimming and maybe even eventually trunk some open water.
00:03:17.050 --> 00:03:23.460
So my goals are just to be healthy and continue to improve at the sport and just really enjoy it.
00:03:24.390 --> 00:03:26.979
Do you feel like you're competitive and you want to win?
00:03:27.912 --> 00:03:36.594
Yeah, I think, personality-wise, as a physician, you have to be a go-getter and you have to be competitive, and so I really enjoy that aspect of swimming.
00:03:36.594 --> 00:03:47.270
But I would say that what I really like about master's is if there's a more relaxed aspect to everything, so you're competitive but at the same time you just want to see people do well and enjoy it.
00:03:47.270 --> 00:03:48.675
So it's a really nice mix.
00:03:49.531 --> 00:03:53.854
Yeah, that is a nice mix, so a couple of questions that I really wanted to ask you.
00:03:53.854 --> 00:04:05.782
In general, we always like to do health and wellness topics, but anything from a urology perspective that's new or that we can make master's summers more healthy for our listeners?
00:04:06.849 --> 00:04:21.100
So I think when you look at some of the more recent trends and exercise, there's a lot of short burst exercise like HIIT type of workouts and those are really easy to fit into your day but we do miss some of the cardiovascular and metabolic benefits.
00:04:21.100 --> 00:04:27.216
So I think when you look at swimming as a mix or as an addition to other workouts, it's really helpful.
00:04:27.216 --> 00:04:33.882
It's great for your cardio, it's really good from a muscle endurance standpoint and maximum strength standpoint.
00:04:33.882 --> 00:04:47.954
So you still get a little bit of that HIIT aspect and some of those burst workouts, but it's just great and I always tell folks as a urologist, I talk to a lot of folks about sexual health and intimacy and the swimming fits that bill.
00:04:47.954 --> 00:04:55.055
You can do it forever, it keeps you healthy and lean, it burns good calories and it gives you good self-esteem and body image.
00:04:55.055 --> 00:04:59.858
So it's actually a really nice way to hit all the points in terms of exercise.
00:05:00.649 --> 00:05:01.132
Beautiful.
00:05:01.132 --> 00:05:03.600
And then the second to last question.
00:05:03.600 --> 00:05:11.603
So your son, nathan, is a top swimmer and we have a lot of parents that are master swimmers, that have kids that are swimmers.
00:05:11.603 --> 00:05:16.963
How does one get their kids into this great sport without putting pressure on them?
00:05:18.050 --> 00:05:19.293
You let them find their place.
00:05:19.293 --> 00:05:21.901
I grew up dabbling in different sports.
00:05:21.901 --> 00:05:26.399
My wife was a big competitive swimmer and what I found?
00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:34.403
That the best approach for us as a couple is good cop, bad cop, but essentially I always lean on, look, enjoy yourself, have a good time.
00:05:34.403 --> 00:05:36.454
Let the coaches coach the swimmer.
00:05:36.454 --> 00:05:44.663
We don't need to do that, so just making sure that they develop that passion, they find that competitive edge if they want to, and maybe they don't, and that's okay too.
00:05:45.550 --> 00:05:45.911
Awesome.
00:05:45.911 --> 00:05:55.201
Okay, the very last question we ask all of our champion's mojo guests is what goes through your mind, kind of emotionally, spiritually, when you dive in the water every day for workout.
00:05:56.050 --> 00:05:57.132
I love this time.
00:05:57.132 --> 00:05:59.617
Swimming is a solitary sport in some ways.
00:05:59.617 --> 00:06:00.158
It's not.
00:06:00.158 --> 00:06:06.629
We're very social and I get to meet a lot of people, but at the same time it's just that time where you turn off your brain.
00:06:06.629 --> 00:06:17.100
I'm often worried about my day to day and my schedule and are my patients doing well, and this is a time for me and to just take it out on the water and it's the best.
00:06:17.812 --> 00:06:18.454
I love that.
00:06:18.454 --> 00:06:20.199
Thanks, doc, appreciate your time.
00:06:20.300 --> 00:06:20.882
Thank you, Kelly.
00:06:22.913 --> 00:06:24.740
Stay tuned for the takeaways.
00:06:25.713 --> 00:06:26.255

00:07:11.372 --> 00:07:12.355
Dr Jason Sabata.
00:07:12.355 --> 00:07:21.125
So he is a busy urologist and even though he's short and sweet, so many nuggets in there.
00:07:21.125 --> 00:07:35.875
My first takeaway and we're just going to do one each on this is you know, he's so busy he still makes time to swim and I love the phrase I can turn my brain off and that he found swimming to be both solitary and social.
00:07:36.776 --> 00:07:38.500
Yeah, he's talked about that a lot.
00:07:38.500 --> 00:07:39.983
I think that sort of surprised him.
00:07:39.983 --> 00:07:43.598
It was great time to be alone and also great time to Be with others.
00:07:43.598 --> 00:07:49.103
So that was good and my takeaway is he talked about kids and he said I think this is really good.
00:07:49.103 --> 00:07:52.598
He said let your kids find their sport and let the coaches coach.
00:07:52.598 --> 00:07:55.607
As parent, you don't have to be coach, don't push them.
00:07:56.336 --> 00:08:09.718
Yeah, I thought that was good advice because I think we can even me, as my kids are now middle-aged but remember trying to push them and help them and give them some advice and that you should just totally let the coaches coach and let the kids find their own way.
00:08:09.718 --> 00:08:14.507
Sport is for 99.99% of the kids in the country.
00:08:14.507 --> 00:08:27.826
Their sport is not going to be what makes them money and my husband, jim, always reminded me that their careers probably gonna be just using their mind and stuff, not doing this sport of Gymnastics or swimming or running or whatever it was that they were doing.
00:08:27.826 --> 00:08:28.487
So I like that.
00:08:28.487 --> 00:08:31.358
Let your kids find their sport they can enjoy and stay out of it.
00:08:32.120 --> 00:08:36.664
Yes, and certainly even with that laid-back, hands-off approach.
00:08:36.664 --> 00:08:47.054
His son is a very high level elite swimmer and probably will get a full scholarship or Make some money, but it works either way.
00:08:47.054 --> 00:08:53.636
Yeah, whether one is gonna try to be a professional or whether one's just having fun, I love that.
00:08:53.636 --> 00:08:58.054
Just let the coaches coach and just you be a parent's off right yeah.
00:08:58.054 --> 00:08:59.759
Love it All.
00:08:59.759 --> 00:09:01.543
Right, maria, another great one in the books.
00:09:01.543 --> 00:09:02.024
Love you.
00:09:02.166 --> 00:09:02.826
Love you, kelly Bye.
