Be inspired as you listen to conversations with champions and now your hosts, kelly Pallas and Maria Parker.
00:00:16.221 --> 00:00:19.571
Hello friends, Welcome to the Champions Mojo podcast.
00:00:19.571 --> 00:00:25.751
I am your host, Kelly Pallas, and, as usual, I am with my co-host, Maria Parker.
00:00:25.751 --> 00:00:28.666
Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it's great to be with you here today.
00:00:28.666 --> 00:00:41.079
Yes, and Maria, this is a special edition of Champions Mojo from the Pool Deck and we have a great interview for you today.
00:00:41.079 --> 00:00:44.951
It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful.
00:00:47.000 --> 00:00:47.640
Yeah, interview for you today.
00:00:47.640 --> 00:00:48.563
It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful.
00:00:48.563 --> 00:00:51.048
Yeah, I wasn't there, but I was able to listen to the interview and some great takeaways.
00:00:51.549 --> 00:00:54.722
Yeah, we hope you'll stick around and catch the takeaways.
00:00:54.722 --> 00:00:56.005
And here we go.
00:00:56.005 --> 00:01:16.219
I'm on deck at the US Masters Nationals with none other than CG Young from the CG Sports Company, and I'm going to give you a quick introduction that CG is not only a great swimmer himself, but he is a sports agent, attorney and, I would say, the agent for Olympic swimmers.
00:01:16.219 --> 00:01:23.662
You rep Lilly King and Katie Grimes and you're just the man to go to, but you are also and this is the cool part you're also a swimmer as well.
00:01:23.662 --> 00:01:24.462
So you've just swam the 50 breast.
00:01:24.462 --> 00:01:26.426
You're just the man to go to, but you are also and this is the cool part you're also a swimmer.
00:01:26.426 --> 00:01:27.947
So you've just swimmed the 50 breast.
00:01:27.947 --> 00:01:29.009
You're out of breath.
00:01:29.009 --> 00:01:30.311
How was that swim for you?
00:01:30.772 --> 00:01:31.653
The swim was pretty good.
00:01:31.653 --> 00:01:33.194
I swam the 100 yesterday.
00:01:33.194 --> 00:01:34.195
That was fun.
00:01:34.195 --> 00:01:40.302
Really hurt at the very end, but it just felt good to come out and race.
00:01:40.302 --> 00:01:43.308
So I was actually at the Paris Olympics a couple of weeks ago, so that was good.
00:01:43.308 --> 00:01:51.483
But I was out of the water for about two weeks but it was really fun just to come here and see a lot of friends get some racing in and I'm pretty happy with that.
00:01:51.483 --> 00:01:53.846
50 breaths too, even though I'm still breathing really hard.
00:01:54.879 --> 00:01:56.787
That's what the on-deck is all about catching you.
00:01:56.787 --> 00:02:02.069
So one of the things that we love to do for Champions Mojo is master swimmers have real lives.
00:02:02.069 --> 00:02:07.465
So you're a master swimmer and you obviously are a busy sports agent just coming back from the Olympics.
00:02:07.465 --> 00:02:10.509
I also know you've got apparel at the end of the lot going.
00:02:10.509 --> 00:02:16.307
So how do you balance your training to be as fast as you are and also run such a successful business?
00:02:16.759 --> 00:02:25.631
Yeah, so right now I'm swimming about three times a week Monday, wednesday, friday mornings typically between 2,500 or 3,000 at the most.
00:02:25.631 --> 00:02:34.411
But I have a really fun group, a really great master's group, and I coach it also, but I coach from the water, so that's a lot of fun, it's really entertaining.
00:02:34.411 --> 00:02:38.479
But I like swimming with people regardless of speed or ability.
00:02:38.479 --> 00:02:39.585
It's just fun to have a group.
00:02:39.585 --> 00:02:43.531
Otherwise I'm not going to be very motivated if I do it by myself.
00:02:43.531 --> 00:02:59.133
I try to get in the weight room when I can, but mostly it's just swimming and just enjoying what I'm doing and not worrying too much about like practice times and stuff like that, although I try to, but at the end of the day you got to balance it and then when I'm not doing that, I'm just, I'm just working.
00:02:59.936 --> 00:03:03.706
I know you take mental preparation very seriously.
00:03:03.706 --> 00:03:07.725
You have a lot of people that you represent that do a lot of mental training.
00:03:07.725 --> 00:03:09.020
What about that approach for you?
00:03:10.216 --> 00:03:12.383
Yeah, I guess mentally on the outside.
00:03:12.383 --> 00:03:18.927
So I try not to take like meets and stuff like this too seriously and try to give myself a little bit of grace.
00:03:18.927 --> 00:03:21.323
I think that's important too in Masters.
00:03:21.323 --> 00:03:25.205
It's not always about being faster than last year or anything.
00:03:25.205 --> 00:03:29.787
I think the fact that you're here and doing it and healthy is the most important thing.
00:03:29.787 --> 00:03:32.824
I was pretty motivated in He-1 for the men's 50 press.
00:03:32.824 --> 00:03:43.306
I think the average age was 89 and a half years old and I think that's a great goal that I aspire to, more so than times or first place or anything like that.
00:03:44.168 --> 00:03:46.459
Yeah, has there been any swam here so far?
00:03:46.459 --> 00:03:47.704
That set itself apart for you.
00:03:48.165 --> 00:03:55.104
Don Hubbard swam the hundred breaths yesterday and he won or two at, I think, 89 or 90 years old.
00:03:55.104 --> 00:03:57.127
That really really stood out to me.
00:03:57.127 --> 00:03:58.456
That was really great.
00:03:58.456 --> 00:04:07.796
On the women's side, a friend of mine, jenna Campbell, who got back into swimming through training for triathlon, so this is just part of her training.
00:04:07.796 --> 00:04:12.026
She does running and biking, but she threw down a two double.
00:04:12.026 --> 00:04:18.586
Oh no, a 202 flat long course, 200 meter free as a master swimmer, which is incredible.
00:04:18.586 --> 00:04:22.639
And I asked her and she was just kind of like, yeah, I swimming is a in as a third of my training.
00:04:22.639 --> 00:04:27.709
It's not everything I do, but I'm much more relaxed and I'm going very close to my best time.
00:04:27.709 --> 00:04:29.800
So that was pretty motivating as well.
00:04:30.283 --> 00:04:34.625
Yeah, yes, I actually interviewed Jenna yesterday and right after that, very impressive, incredible.
00:04:34.665 --> 00:04:34.966
Yeah.
00:04:35.516 --> 00:04:40.026
So the last question is there anything that I haven't asked you that you might want to share with our listeners?
00:04:40.574 --> 00:04:56.107
Yeah, one of the things that I do for work is it's really important for me as an agent to really get to know my athletes, my clients, to know their backstory, know what's special about them, because a lot of that is what I'm presenting to companies on why they align really well.
00:04:56.107 --> 00:05:04.487
And a few years ago we found a secret weapon and it was if we booked our clients and our athletes on the Champions Mojo podcast.
00:05:04.487 --> 00:05:10.605
Kelly and Maria do such a good job of getting these athletes to feel comfortable.
00:05:10.605 --> 00:05:33.560
Many of them are introverted, but getting them to feel comfortable and sharing their story sharing not just what they do today but why they started getting into it, their family hobbies, all sorts of stuff and we've used that more than probably any other piece of marketing to prepare not just myself, but I have other agents at the business now and it's part of their required reading and homework if they're ever going to represent one of our athletes in the field.
00:05:33.560 --> 00:05:35.600
So it's our secret to success.
00:05:36.163 --> 00:05:36.624
I love it.
00:05:36.624 --> 00:05:38.081
You plug me, I plug you.
00:05:38.081 --> 00:05:45.406
If you know an Olympic swimmer or an Olympic athlete out there, they need to sign up and have CG Young represent them with CG Sports Company.
00:05:45.406 --> 00:05:47.088
Thanks, cg, really appreciate your time.
00:05:50.059 --> 00:05:50.180
Yeah.
00:05:50.199 --> 00:05:51.728
Thanks so much for cheering me on.
00:05:51.728 --> 00:05:52.533
It's great to see you.
00:05:52.533 --> 00:05:53.338
Stay tuned for the takeaways.
00:05:53.338 --> 00:05:54.843
Want to succeed like a champion?
00:05:54.843 --> 00:06:11.228
Five-time Olympic coach Bob Bowman, coach of Olympic legend Michael Phelps, says Kelly's book Take your Mark Lead is a powerful addition to your personal improvement library, and learners from all walks of life will gain key insights and enjoy this inspiring book.
00:06:11.228 --> 00:06:18.629
Take your Mark Lead debuted as an Amazon number one bestseller in five categories and is available online.
00:06:18.629 --> 00:06:20.862
And now the takeaways.
00:06:22.615 --> 00:06:27.487
All right, cg Young, a man that is near and dear to our hearts.
00:06:27.487 --> 00:06:29.862
And Maria, what was your?
00:06:29.961 --> 00:06:35.944
first takeaway oh, he's great, but I love that he said that he gives himself grace.
00:06:35.944 --> 00:06:37.247
He's out there competing.
00:06:37.247 --> 00:06:46.641
He doesn't have to do that, but he's out there competing and he says you know, I just come out here, I have fun, I see people and I don't always have to improve.
00:06:46.641 --> 00:06:50.548
I mean, I think if we do want to improve, there's nothing wrong with ambition to get better.
00:06:50.548 --> 00:07:01.161
But sometimes you have to give yourself grace and I love that word Like, oh, I'm just going to go out there and do the best I can and I'm not.
00:07:01.161 --> 00:07:03.805
You know, you work your butt out and you really want to see improvement.
00:07:03.805 --> 00:07:05.889
But I love that he gives himself grace.
00:07:06.894 --> 00:07:12.665
Yes, that's your word, which you have taught me and I've learned so much from you about giving myself grace.
00:07:12.665 --> 00:07:15.043
So glad to hear him reiterate that.
00:07:15.043 --> 00:07:19.545
My main takeaway is that he has so much fun by training in a group.
00:07:19.545 --> 00:07:20.326
That's why he does it.
00:07:20.326 --> 00:07:21.497
That's what it's all about.
00:07:21.497 --> 00:07:30.129
He wouldn't show up if he was doing it alone and I agree so much with that, and you know we encourage you if you're out there training alone, find a group.
00:07:30.129 --> 00:07:35.161
There's probably a group you could train with, even if it's one other person.
00:07:35.161 --> 00:07:39.583
So he is just having fun in a group and that's really what Master Swimming is about.
00:07:39.583 --> 00:07:46.184
So loved, loved that interview, love CG and so glad we finally got him on Champions.
00:07:46.204 --> 00:07:47.766
Mojo, he's great.
00:07:48.187 --> 00:07:50.089
Yeah, all right, love you Maria, love you Bye.
00:07:51.956 --> 00:07:54.966
Thank you for listening to the Champions Mojo podcast.
00:07:54.966 --> 00:07:56.279
Did you enjoy the show?
00:07:56.279 --> 00:08:03.180
