Welcome to the award-winning Champions Mojo hosted by two world record-holding athletes.

00:00:06.232 --> 00:00:13.769
Be inspired as you listen to conversations with champions and now your hosts, kelly Palace and Maria Parker.

00:00:17.321 --> 00:00:20.690
Hello friends, welcome to the Champions Mojo podcast.

00:00:20.690 --> 00:00:26.871
I am your host, kelly Palace, and, as usual, I am with my co-host, maria Parker.

00:00:26.871 --> 00:00:29.768
Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it's great to be with you here today.

00:00:29.768 --> 00:00:42.271
Yes, and Maria, this is a special edition of Champions Mojo from the pool deck and we have a great interview for you today.

00:00:42.271 --> 00:00:46.070
It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful.

00:00:46.720 --> 00:00:47.902
Yeah, and we.

00:00:47.902 --> 00:00:53.654
I wasn't there, but I was able to listen to the interview and some great takeaways.

00:00:54.161 --> 00:00:57.310
Yeah, we hope you'll stick around and catch the takeaways.

00:00:57.310 --> 00:00:58.564
And here we go.

00:00:58.564 --> 00:01:07.421
So we're on deck at the Rodney Gaines 15th annual meet and we're with Karen Torres, who is a brand new master swimmer, Karen.

00:01:07.460 --> 00:01:09.489
Is this your first meet in how long?

00:01:09.489 --> 00:01:13.665
It was my first meet in 34 years 34 years.

00:01:13.739 --> 00:01:17.090
So you swam at the Division I level with the University of Arkansas.

00:01:17.090 --> 00:01:19.087
You had a great triathlon career.

00:01:19.087 --> 00:01:20.885
What brought you back?

00:01:20.926 --> 00:01:22.382
to Masters Kelly.

00:01:22.382 --> 00:01:24.368
If you really want to know, it would be you.

00:01:24.368 --> 00:01:42.007
Kelly is my college twin coach at Arkansas and both of us are distance swimmers and we not only hit it off as coach-simmer relationship, but then we got a triathlon together and then we've been friends ever since and she called me to call to duty and when Kelly calls, you got an answer yeah.

00:01:42.599 --> 00:01:51.968
So Karen's being very modest, because she was part of a world record-setting relay last night the 4x200 free relay.

00:01:51.968 --> 00:01:53.859
And Karen, how did that feel?

00:01:53.859 --> 00:02:03.111
Tell us a little bit about what it was like to just come into that kind of pressure to hey, I haven't swam in 34 years and I've been now asked to step up and try to set a world record.

00:02:03.921 --> 00:02:30.288
Okay, a lot of pressure and the fact that there's a big difference between swimming pace training and swimming like anaerobically, where I've got to like really push my limits, where the oxygen is not in my legs anymore, when my shoulders are on fire, and I had to put myself through that and know that I do 200 meters and it took me like five weeks to get some speed going and so it's hard work and I didn't know what to expect going into it at all.

00:02:30.288 --> 00:02:32.527
I was just super excited to be asked to be part of it.

00:02:32.527 --> 00:02:33.943
Were you nervous?

00:02:33.943 --> 00:02:37.122
So nervous when I was on the blocks?

00:02:37.122 --> 00:02:46.701
By the way, I have never done a track start ever because I'm that old and my legs were so shaky because I was worried about even doing a track start on my first time ever.

00:02:46.701 --> 00:02:49.008
Back on a huge relay.

00:02:49.008 --> 00:02:53.324
My heart was like way up there in my chest beating strong and, yeah, I was very nervous.

00:02:54.240 --> 00:03:02.187
What advice would you give someone that has been off for many years, maybe decades, that obviously not everybody's going to come out on their first meet and try for a world.

00:03:02.187 --> 00:03:03.010
Refer on a relay.

00:03:03.010 --> 00:03:08.627
What advice might you give to somebody who's sitting on the couch thinking maybe I should do masters after you've done now the whole meet.

00:03:08.627 --> 00:03:09.342
So you did that.

00:03:09.342 --> 00:03:10.602
Last night you swam.

00:03:10.602 --> 00:03:13.843
Two individual events today Describe this neat environment.

00:03:15.020 --> 00:03:23.066
First of all, swimming is that non-impact overall great core strength, arms, shoulders, backs everything.

00:03:23.066 --> 00:03:36.175
So this swimming by itself is like a lifelong sport and this environment brings all sorts of people to the master swimming world and it gives people so much pride, no matter if they're the slowest person or the fastest person.

00:03:36.175 --> 00:03:38.064
There's so much pride in just being part of it.

00:03:38.064 --> 00:03:41.328
You have your moment in that lane to be the best you can be.

00:03:41.328 --> 00:03:42.270
It doesn't matter.

00:03:42.270 --> 00:03:44.768
No one's like watching your times, watching where you rank.

00:03:44.768 --> 00:03:48.887
You're just there to feel good about yourself and at the end of the day you're like I accomplished something today.

00:03:49.919 --> 00:03:58.010
One of my favorite quotes is by Rick Walker, and I say it all the time and you are a regular listener to Champions Mocho and Rick says there's no pressure because really no one's watching.

00:03:58.840 --> 00:04:00.105
Yeah, I would say that's true.

00:04:00.105 --> 00:04:05.659
You don't even know if your competitor beside you is a guy or going to be a girl, and you don't know what age their end.

00:04:05.659 --> 00:04:11.787
So you're there in the moment, totally by yourself, to challenge yourself really, and that's cool in and of itself to see how you can push yourself.

00:04:12.229 --> 00:04:12.449
Yeah.

00:04:12.449 --> 00:04:15.626
So, Karen, I knew pulling you in you were going to be in pretty good shape.

00:04:15.626 --> 00:04:17.209
Because you do like swims.

00:04:17.209 --> 00:04:19.264
You swim lucky Three times a week.

00:04:19.264 --> 00:04:26.305
Tell us just a little bit about what your general swimming training's been over the last few years with the Lucky Lake Swim.

00:04:27.379 --> 00:04:42.079
So Lucky's Lake Swim is an out and back thousand meters and so I typically do that about twice a week and that's pace freestyle For a lesson, off pro paddles and pull buoy and just pace it out and feel kind of good in control.

00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:51.937
And then I try to swim the pool on Monday mornings and there I'll do some more interval trainings and kicking some sets, but it hasn't been anything crazy.

00:04:51.937 --> 00:04:58.822
I probably average like 2,000 to 3,000 yards max ever in the last 30 some years.

00:04:59.651 --> 00:05:02.509
So obviously you swam a great leg on a relay last night.

00:05:02.509 --> 00:05:09.497
We broke the world record by 11 seconds and everybody says it was because you stepped up and filled the gap there from our last year record.

00:05:09.497 --> 00:05:12.800
So you did do a little training five weeks out.

00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:14.896
Would you give some credit to?

00:05:14.956 --> 00:05:15.899
helping you get ready.

00:05:15.899 --> 00:05:33.389
I would definitely say that Brody, brody Hines Okay, brody, shout out to you because he not only gave me advice, but he absolutely did all of my workouts with me and he is pushing me and that really pulled me along too, because I was accountable to somebody, and that actually helped quite a bit.

00:05:34.112 --> 00:05:37.910
Yeah, accountability is huge and there is someone out there that might train with you.

00:05:37.910 --> 00:05:40.038
And yeah, brody is in the Orlando area.

00:05:40.038 --> 00:05:42.077
I've interviewed him on Champiitmojo.

00:05:42.077 --> 00:05:46.529
He's an MIT grad and a swan coach and he's a great swimmer and a great person.

00:05:46.529 --> 00:05:58.899
So, yeah, I was really glad to hear that Brody was helping you All right here in the last question, we always ask everyone on Champiitmojo it's a spiritual question when you dive in that water, what feeling do you?

00:05:58.939 --> 00:05:59.120
get.

00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:01.416
Well, there's two different, totally different things here.

00:06:01.416 --> 00:06:08.557
But I have to tell myself to relax and just go through the process of not racing on the first length.

00:06:08.557 --> 00:06:12.300
But there's so much gratitude even in the short race at an end.

00:06:12.300 --> 00:06:22.940
I just sometimes take a moment, even when I'm in the race, to think I'm actually doing this, when most people would never even take the chance to be out of there and be challenging themselves.

00:06:22.940 --> 00:06:31.077
I'm 56 years old and I know a lot of us are all settled in our ways and don't put ourselves out there, and so I guess that's probably what is this gratitude.

00:06:31.077 --> 00:06:32.755
And I'm thinking quotes too.

00:06:32.755 --> 00:06:34.375
I heard this not too long ago.

00:06:34.375 --> 00:06:43.500
They said if you're green, you're growing, and if you're ripe, you're rotting, and that just kind of says put yourself out there, try something new.

00:06:43.500 --> 00:06:45.029
There's no such thing as failure.

00:06:45.029 --> 00:06:46.761
It's all about learning and growing.

00:06:46.761 --> 00:06:48.067
I love it.

00:06:48.067 --> 00:06:50.096
Karen, thanks for being on Champiitmojo.

00:06:50.096 --> 00:06:50.738
I love you.

00:06:53.870 --> 00:06:55.697
Stay tuned for the takeaways.

00:06:56.810 --> 00:07:00.290
Are you struggling to put on those tight tech suits before your big meet?

00:07:00.290 --> 00:07:04.670
Well, you're in luck because there is a product called Skin Slick.

00:07:04.670 --> 00:07:11.990
It's an anti-friction spray-on sports lubricant that will allow you to slide into the tightest of tech suits.

00:07:11.990 --> 00:07:20.848
A couple sprays around your hips, thighs and your bum is all you need to squeeze into those compact suits in half the time.

00:07:20.848 --> 00:07:21.209
That's right.

00:07:21.209 --> 00:07:24.149
Skin Slick makes it much easier.

00:07:24.149 --> 00:07:26.230
It also prevents chafing.

00:07:26.230 --> 00:07:42.045
So if your straps are giving you cuts on your shoulders, go ahead and give that area a couple of sprays and you're good to go Head over to SBR Sports Inc and use code MOJO23 for 23% off Skin Slick today.

00:07:43.533 --> 00:07:45.139
And now the takeaways.

00:07:47.295 --> 00:07:50.089
Well, you know, karen Torres is nearer to my heart.

00:07:50.149 --> 00:07:55.166
Yeah, I've had the good fortune of getting to know Karen a little bit, as I've followed you around.

00:07:55.166 --> 00:08:01.189
Karen's been a part of your life for a long time and what a terrific thing to have her swimming with you.

00:08:01.189 --> 00:08:02.574
You must have been so excited.

00:08:03.036 --> 00:08:09.903
Yes, and I'm only six years older than she is, but she swam for me when I was a coach at the University of Arkansas.

00:08:09.923 --> 00:08:10.550
Her spiritual mother.

00:08:10.550 --> 00:08:11.642
So then I got to recruit her.

00:08:12.007 --> 00:08:30.083
Yes, so I got to recruit her to come and swim in this world's record setting relay, and also she's been a very good listener to Champions MOJO and she always calls me or texts me on different shows that she likes, and so how appropriate to have her on the show as a world record holder now.

00:08:30.672 --> 00:08:32.284
Well, she's a champion anyway, yeah.

00:08:32.567 --> 00:08:37.169
She is, and she's had a great career in triathlon, and she's always been very, very fit and active.

00:08:37.169 --> 00:08:40.865
So what was your first takeaway on just a little brief conversation?

00:08:40.990 --> 00:08:46.397
I love that, how she had five weeks to get into shape to be on this world record-breaking team which congratulations, by the way.

00:08:46.397 --> 00:08:51.190
But I love that and this works so well for me she had a partner to swim with.

00:08:51.190 --> 00:08:52.615
She had an accountability partner.

00:08:52.615 --> 00:08:58.070
That is so terrific and makes getting to your goal so much easier.

00:08:58.070 --> 00:09:00.070
If you've got somebody, you're just going to get out of bed.

00:09:00.070 --> 00:09:02.629
You've got to meet somebody out there, so I love that.

00:09:02.629 --> 00:09:04.870
That's something that's worked really well for me.

00:09:04.870 --> 00:09:11.443
I haven't always had in my life but a good reminder to just get somebody who's on the same train as you and get out there and do it with them.

00:09:12.208 --> 00:09:21.464
Yes, and that accountability partner was Brodie Hines, who is a great friend of Mark and I's and he's been on the show and he's awesome and, yeah, I thanks Brodie.

00:09:21.464 --> 00:09:24.946
During the meet I was like thanks for everything you did for Karen.

00:09:24.946 --> 00:09:28.697
He coached her, he met her at practice, he swam with her and that was wonderful.

00:09:28.697 --> 00:09:34.629
My one takeaway was that Karen was a little nervous, but then she just decided to use gratitude.

00:09:34.629 --> 00:09:45.409
She was just grateful to be able to do it at the age that we are, that we're swimming masters and we get to do this, we get to put ourself on the line, and that she's grateful for that.

00:09:45.409 --> 00:09:50.381
So I always think gratitude is a foil for nervousness.

00:09:50.631 --> 00:09:51.828
It's a tool for pressure.

00:09:51.828 --> 00:09:59.090
It's a great way to think about it, absolutely, because, yeah, it's hard to be all bent up and bunched up with.

00:09:59.090 --> 00:10:02.876
You're thinking, wow, I'm lucky to be here, I think that's great, yes, yeah.

00:10:03.331 --> 00:10:05.330
So, anyway, it was great to talk with Karen.

00:10:05.429 --> 00:10:08.697
Yeah, it's great to hear her voice, and just yeah great to have her on the show.

00:10:08.830 --> 00:10:10.554
All right, we're in another great one in the books.

00:10:10.554 --> 00:10:12.179
Love you All right, love you, Kelly Bye.

00:10:12.179 --> 00:10:12.861
Bye-bye.

00:10:14.429 --> 00:10:17.440
Thank you for listening to the Champions Mojo podcast.

00:10:17.440 --> 00:10:18.754
Did you enjoy the show?

00:10:18.754 --> 00:10:25.596
We'd be grateful if you would leave us a five star review on iTunes to help others find us, and we'd also love to hear from you.
