Welcome to the award-winning Champions Mojo, hosted by two world record-holding athletes and health coaches.

00:00:07.483 --> 00:00:15.269
Be inspired as you listen to conversations with champions And now your hosts, kelly Palace and Maria Parker.

00:00:15.679 --> 00:00:19.050
Hello friends, welcome to the Champions Mojo podcast.

00:00:19.050 --> 00:00:25.211
I am your host, kelly Palace, and, as usual, i am with my co-host, maria Parker.

00:00:25.211 --> 00:00:28.126
Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it's great to be with you here today.

00:00:28.126 --> 00:00:40.609
Yes, and Maria, this is a special edition of Champions Mojo from the pool deck, and we have a great interview for you today.

00:00:40.609 --> 00:00:46.262
It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful, Yeah, and we.

00:00:46.683 --> 00:00:51.792
I wasn't there, but I was able to listen to the interview and some great takeaways.

00:00:52.299 --> 00:00:55.469
Yeah, we hope you'll stick around and catch the takeaways.

00:00:55.469 --> 00:00:56.728
And here we go.

00:00:56.728 --> 00:01:09.611
We are here for on deck inspiration at the YMCA National Championships in Fort Lauderdale And I am with Nancy Cricka, who swims with the Sarasota Sharks Y Masters.

00:01:09.611 --> 00:01:20.753
Nancy is part of 18 national and world record relays, so we want to talk about relays and being a team player today with Nancy.

00:01:20.753 --> 00:01:26.210
So, nancy, just answer me the question of why are relays so important to you?

00:01:27.439 --> 00:01:28.846
I've always loved relays.

00:01:28.846 --> 00:01:40.750
I've always asked people to be on relays with me In fact, i beg them because sometimes I always thinking of their individual events but I always swim my fastest and my best when I'm swimming for someone else.

00:01:40.750 --> 00:01:53.033
So when I'm on a relay, that's when I do my best and when I have my most fun, and through that I've been able to set, as you said, 18 US and world records at this Y meet.

00:01:53.033 --> 00:01:56.746
I have three more, so it's really actually 21.

00:01:58.129 --> 00:01:58.912
That's awesome.

00:01:58.912 --> 00:02:02.049
So your best event is the 53.

00:02:02.049 --> 00:02:03.325
You like that the best.

00:02:03.325 --> 00:02:11.411
You swam at Arizona State University, right And so share with a little story you talked about with me offline about what your ASU coach told you.

00:02:11.872 --> 00:02:16.067
All right, I wrote my coach back then It was by letter, in the mail.

00:02:16.067 --> 00:02:18.145
I said do you ever cut anybody?

00:02:18.145 --> 00:02:20.646
And she said, no, I never cut anybody.

00:02:20.646 --> 00:02:27.812
But when I got to Arizona it was the best women's swimming team at the time for anyone in college.

00:02:27.812 --> 00:02:29.365
It had all the fastest swimmers.

00:02:29.365 --> 00:02:40.253
And I got there and she said to me I have so many good swimmers, I don't need you because you're just a 25 yard freestyle swimmer and I don't need you.

00:02:40.253 --> 00:02:41.283
You don't have a stroke.

00:02:41.283 --> 00:02:42.644
And so I was cut.

00:02:43.319 --> 00:02:48.765
So you are this world record holder and, nancy, you're being very humble because you hold a lot of other records.

00:02:48.765 --> 00:02:50.645
You hold a lot of LMSC records.

00:02:50.645 --> 00:02:57.248
Individually, you are a great swimmer, but it's the other part of you that you're a player.

00:02:57.248 --> 00:03:00.426
Have you ever thought about how that just plays out in your life?

00:03:01.599 --> 00:03:05.850
When I worked at IBM, we had 7,000 employees.

00:03:05.850 --> 00:03:07.064
They were all the same age.

00:03:07.064 --> 00:03:08.506
We all started at the same time.

00:03:08.506 --> 00:03:15.012
We were all really good friends And I never felt that we were competitive or stabbing each other in the back.

00:03:15.012 --> 00:03:15.963
We all worked together.

00:03:15.963 --> 00:03:18.485
To me, i was always a team player.

00:03:18.485 --> 00:03:27.466
I always did my best, helping other people and trying to be my best for the team, and it always made me the best person I could be.

00:03:28.007 --> 00:03:44.070
Yeah, i think this is such a good point And I'm on the Melbourne Masters and we had 52 relays at the Routing Games meet And some of those people it was their first time ever swimming and they ended up being world ranked at the end of the year because of that.

00:03:44.070 --> 00:03:46.606
So it's a good selling point to.

00:03:46.606 --> 00:03:48.010
It's a great place to start.

00:03:48.010 --> 00:03:49.766
You do swim faster for other people.

00:03:49.766 --> 00:03:53.007
Now what is being part of the Sarasota Sharks?

00:03:53.046 --> 00:03:57.028
team mean to you, because I'm on the Sarasota Sharks team.

00:03:57.028 --> 00:04:14.711
We have a really good coach that helps us to be our best And I've gotten lots of little tips, but it's the camaraderie of all the people that I swim with, the interfacing with people who love to swim, just like I love to swim, and I just enjoy being with my team.

00:04:14.711 --> 00:04:15.842
Yeah.

00:04:16.761 --> 00:04:19.908
And so the very last question is what goes through your mind?

00:04:19.988 --> 00:04:21.071
when you hit that water.

00:04:21.071 --> 00:04:25.512
One time a doctor asked me that question and I didn't think I did.

00:04:25.512 --> 00:04:43.033
But I am always listening to my body and thinking how can I be better with my strokes, What I should be thinking about keeping my elbows up or getting a good turn, or thinking about my breathing and perfect strokes always.

00:04:43.334 --> 00:04:45.942
Okay, so why would a doctor ask you what you?

00:04:45.963 --> 00:04:57.353
think when you dive in, the pathologist actually was a fellow teammate of mine and he was trying to distract me because he was doing a surgery on skin cancer and he was trying to take my mind off of it.

00:04:57.353 --> 00:05:01.908
So that was this conversational thing to take my mind off of what he was doing.

00:05:02.350 --> 00:05:03.415
Aren't those doctors?

00:05:03.857 --> 00:05:04.759
tricky Yeah.

00:05:05.182 --> 00:05:07.571
Nancy, what a pleasure and what an inspiration you are.

00:05:07.571 --> 00:05:09.478
Thanks for spending this time with me today.

00:05:09.478 --> 00:05:10.761
Thank you, kelly.

00:05:11.062 --> 00:05:12.927
Stay tuned for the takeaways.

00:05:13.889 --> 00:05:14.411

00:05:14.411 --> 00:05:18.019

00:05:52.456 --> 00:05:54.079
And now the takeaways.

00:06:00.487 --> 00:06:15.576
So Nancy Cricka could easily be introduced as a multiple world record holder, because she is, and I love it when people are introduced as an Olympic champion.

00:06:15.576 --> 00:06:25.666
They may be an Olympic champion on a relay And I think in swimming it is a big accolade to be a world record holder, an Olympic champion.

00:06:25.666 --> 00:06:27.913
And so what Individual relay?

00:06:27.913 --> 00:06:37.055
you're there, you're doing it, and Nancy has 18 actually now 21 US or world records on relays, which we talked about.

00:06:37.055 --> 00:06:51.358
But that is quite an accomplishment And she loves relays, says that she's just highly motivated, more motivated to swim relays than she is anything else, and it certainly has paid off for her.

00:06:52.201 --> 00:06:53.786
Yeah, i could really relate to Nancy.

00:06:53.786 --> 00:06:55.915
I love the idea that which she said.

00:06:55.915 --> 00:06:59.845
I swim faster for my teammates than I do for myself, and that's so great.

00:06:59.845 --> 00:07:00.586
I feel that way too.

00:07:00.586 --> 00:07:07.581
I push myself on my bike races when I'm doing it as a team much more so than when I'm just doing it for my own personal glory.

00:07:07.581 --> 00:07:13.466
So I think it's a good thing to remember that swimming is a team sport too, that you can really have a good time.

00:07:13.466 --> 00:07:17.740
And I guess she came in with 18, but now she has 21 because they got three more.

00:07:17.740 --> 00:07:21.660
So she got some national records obviously a team player in her whole life.

00:07:21.660 --> 00:07:22.985
But that's what she's about.

00:07:22.985 --> 00:07:26.838
I will do more for my people than I will do for myself, and I love that.

00:07:26.838 --> 00:07:28.201
I can completely relate to that.

00:07:28.341 --> 00:07:38.629
Yes, And also we love to talk about how the traits from swimming do wash over into our lives And Nancy is a huge volunteer for our LMSC.

00:07:38.875 --> 00:07:46.661
She's been volunteer of the year, she officiates, she's the records keeper for our whole LMSC, which is a lot of work.

00:07:46.661 --> 00:08:14.418
She's a team player And that's her mojo is she gets motivated to do it for the team And I know that she recruits people to be on relays And I know I love to recruit people to be on relays And it's just, if you're out there listening and you may not even want to enter a meet individually, maybe talk with your teammates about, hey, i just want to dip my toe in the pool And I want to try a relay first And that's a fun way to get into a swim meet and just do relays.

00:08:14.418 --> 00:08:15.382
Maybe think about that.

00:08:15.382 --> 00:08:20.622
But anyway, it was great to hear from Nancy and hear that perspective, which I think is novel and new.

00:08:20.622 --> 00:08:23.011
It's a new mojo, i agree.

00:08:23.011 --> 00:08:24.095
All right, love you Maria.

00:08:24.095 --> 00:08:24.937
Love you Bye.

00:08:24.956 --> 00:08:25.117
Bye.

00:08:25.117 --> 00:08:28.223
Thank you for listening to the Champions Mojo podcast.

00:08:28.223 --> 00:08:29.487
