Former US National Teamer Bill Weaver Returns to the Sport EP 237

Bill Weaver from North Carolina Master Swimming has swum at the highest levels of the sport. And while most elite swimmers don't care to put themselves on the line in competition very often Bill has embraced it.  Bill, with his infectious passion for the swimming, discusses his triumphant return to swimming post-COVID and how it's become more than just a pastime for him. His arduous five-day-a-week training routine and anticipation for the upcoming meets truly exemplify his commitment.

Bill trains and competes with Masters superstar Erika Braun and share a bound that inspires and pushes them towards their goals. Let's together celebrate the spirit of perseverance and passion that champions like Bill and Erika encapsulate and maybe, just maybe, you'll find the spark to pursue your own dreams.

Welcome to the award-winning Champions Mojo hosted by two world record-holding athletes.

00:00:06.232 --> 00:00:13.766
Be inspired as you listen to conversations with champions and now your hosts, kelly Palace and Maria Parker.

00:00:17.379 --> 00:00:20.690
Hello friends, welcome to the Champions Mojo podcast.

00:00:20.690 --> 00:00:26.871
I am your host, kelly Palace, and, as usual, I am with my co-host, maria Parker.

00:00:26.871 --> 00:00:29.768
Hey Maria, hey Kelly, it's great to be with you here today.

00:00:29.768 --> 00:00:42.270
Yes, and Maria, this is a special edition of Champions Mojo from the pool deck and we have a great interview for you today.

00:00:42.270 --> 00:00:46.070
It's brief, it's short, but it's powerful.

00:00:46.720 --> 00:00:47.902
Yeah, and we.

00:00:47.902 --> 00:00:53.654
I wasn't there, but I was able to listen to the interview and some great takeaways.

00:00:54.159 --> 00:00:57.308
Yeah, we hope you'll stick around and catch the takeaways.

00:00:57.308 --> 00:00:58.561
And here we go.

00:00:58.561 --> 00:01:07.727
I'm on deck with Bill Weaver, part of North Carolina master swimming, and they just won first-ever regional team.

00:01:07.727 --> 00:01:13.890
Erica Bronze here with us and we're at the Routing Games, 15th annual classic master swimming.

00:01:13.890 --> 00:01:18.409
We're on deck, in fact, roddy's in the background doing a clinic for kids, which is awesome.

00:01:18.409 --> 00:01:24.412
Bill, you went on and fly just now and you beat some pretty serious names.

00:01:24.412 --> 00:01:26.608
People know Dan Letano on this podcast.

00:01:26.608 --> 00:01:31.447
In fact, dan Letano's podcast is the number one downloaded show that I've ever recorded.

00:01:31.447 --> 00:01:32.790
Yeah, that's a bright one.

00:01:32.790 --> 00:01:33.331
I'm sorry.

00:01:33.411 --> 00:01:36.094
Erica, yours is very popular too, so you beat Dan.

00:01:36.094 --> 00:01:38.728
So give us a little bit of a round on your swimming.

00:01:39.722 --> 00:01:44.990
I swim in a high estate back in the 90s mid 90s, there's a three-time big team champion of the whole.

00:01:44.990 --> 00:01:57.191
Back in sale, america, there's a US national team that had to fly in the 90s 20 years ass and started swimming again just after COVID and bad in the master's and love it.

00:01:57.191 --> 00:02:06.391
To be honest, recently my wife and I were re-accurated from the Cleveland area to North Carolina and now I'm swimming at TAC in that area.

00:02:06.391 --> 00:02:14.385
We're a bunch of other great people and so it's just it's been an awesome experience and a great avenue to meet a lot of fun people and get reconnected with swimming.

00:02:15.479 --> 00:02:19.727
This is such a great story because I always talk about Erica Bronze and in fact, we kind of have a joke.

00:02:19.727 --> 00:02:27.569
It's like a meme within our show that I have to mention Erica Bronze name in every episode, and I just got interviewed by self and I mentioned you, erica.

00:02:27.569 --> 00:02:31.530
So I love that you guys swam together from high school.

00:02:31.530 --> 00:02:43.110
But one of the things that people who were really good when they're young, especially on an actual team like you were, they fear master streaming because they're not going to live up to what they used to be.

00:02:43.110 --> 00:02:47.150
So what is your mindset when you come in and you're like you know, I may get beat.

00:02:48.161 --> 00:02:50.669
It's funny you say that it kept me out of this sport for a long time.

00:02:50.669 --> 00:03:07.288
I just always I couldn't stop measuring myself with where I used to be, and I know I just age, perspective change and now I just I love it, I enjoy every moment and my body doesn't hurt like it used to, so I've given myself enough time before my shoulders didn't heal, so that helps a lot.

00:03:07.288 --> 00:03:09.703
See, I'm not picky all the time, so I don't know.

00:03:09.703 --> 00:03:11.329
I just different perspective.

00:03:11.329 --> 00:03:13.508
Age helps us grow a little bit, so it's been good.

00:03:13.980 --> 00:03:14.925
What is your training?

00:03:14.925 --> 00:03:21.824
Like a little bit to go as fast as you did today, and the tell us exactly what was your time in the Hunter flying Sure force meters.

00:03:22.401 --> 00:03:25.330
I was 57.94 today in the Hunter family.

00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:31.991
How did you build into it so you weren't frustrated and you're not in pain, which you know is a great thing?

00:03:31.991 --> 00:03:33.183
How did you build into it?

00:03:33.183 --> 00:03:34.247
What is your training like now?

00:03:35.100 --> 00:03:41.590
My wife loves this new master's son, it's her social outlet, and so she got me into it and got me back into it.

00:03:41.590 --> 00:03:48.919
Coming out of COVID, it was just this great opportunity just to get back in to society, to be honest and just get around people with like-minded interests.

00:03:48.919 --> 00:04:00.129
And that was really the driver, and I really didn't have any expectations in terms of performance, and so because of that, it allowed me to make an easy entry and now I swim quite about five days a week.

00:04:00.129 --> 00:04:05.167
One of those is on my own and then the other four are with the team and it's just been a blast.

00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:08.710
Mark and I my husband, who also swims together, which is nice.

00:04:08.710 --> 00:04:12.725
We have never samed the TAC Titan pull-up, so we were like blown away.

00:04:12.725 --> 00:04:18.870
And obviously Erica trains there, and what is that training environment like for masters?

00:04:19.802 --> 00:04:34.670
It's a lot of fun, it's competitive, there's a lot of strong personalities there and we're always pushing each other, but there's also a lot of encouragement and it's like the old adage there's safety in numbers and so it's just fun to go and show up in the morning and know that you're going to see all these familiar faces and just pre-peeple.

00:04:35.620 --> 00:04:40.713
Did you exceed or meet or fall short of your goals for the Rowdy Gaines meet this weekend?

00:04:41.622 --> 00:04:42.839
I would say that I met them.

00:04:42.839 --> 00:04:44.819
I didn't have a lot of real high-end goals.

00:04:44.819 --> 00:04:47.620
It's first meet I've done this season and so this was my baseline.

00:04:47.620 --> 00:04:51.319
So I want to come here, figure out where I was ran into short-course meters.

00:04:51.319 --> 00:05:00.966
I had to race short-course meters since the 90s, so this case, getting back into it, we've got another short-course meter we will do later in December, so we might put a little more emphasis now that we've done.

00:05:00.966 --> 00:05:01.428
Never been here.

00:05:02.021 --> 00:05:02.964
That was my next question.

00:05:02.964 --> 00:05:06.540
So do you think there will be more meets, maybe a Nationals?

00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:09.470
How far are you willing to take this little thing?

00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:23.639
Yeah, we're probably going to get a North Trieste in December, and I swam last year too, so I think the 50-year-old 50-to-25, that it is a henna yard fly record last year, so take another shot at that for sure.

00:05:23.639 --> 00:05:28.031
Wow, you broke the national record after just being back that short of a time.

00:05:28.752 --> 00:05:29.052
I did.

00:05:29.052 --> 00:05:29.954
Yeah, it was fun.

00:05:30.595 --> 00:05:31.336
That's great.

00:05:31.336 --> 00:05:37.211
So, mill, you're 51 and you were on a relay world record this summer.

00:05:37.211 --> 00:05:44.235
Are you going to set your goals that high for another world record, maybe individually, now that you have a national record and a relay world record?

00:05:44.956 --> 00:05:46.875
Yeah, probably the chase is the fun part.

00:05:46.875 --> 00:05:51.319
Right, it's nice to hit goals, but really the pursuit is kind of what drives you and what gets you up in the morning.

00:05:51.319 --> 00:05:54.550
So I'll absolutely take a shot at it while I can.

00:05:55.660 --> 00:06:03.672
So I always talk about how much Erica inspires me, erica Braun and truly Erica's always whole of advice.

00:06:03.672 --> 00:06:06.952
And, like I said, I just got interviewed and somebody said what's the difference?

00:06:06.952 --> 00:06:07.699
Why are you dropping?

00:06:07.699 --> 00:06:14.439
Because I said two national records in this meet I would hold it and so Erica set I don't know three national records and one world record.

00:06:14.601 --> 00:06:16.279
Yeah, so three national is one world for Erica.

00:06:16.279 --> 00:06:19.779
But Erica always takes the time to help me, give me advice.

00:06:19.779 --> 00:06:22.934
She gave me a piece of advice at a Nova meet which I had a bad meet.

00:06:22.934 --> 00:06:24.896
She's like this is what you need to do, this is what you need to do.

00:06:24.896 --> 00:06:31.329
And so how has Erica and Plowinsch are swimming, and especially since she's been friends since she was in high school.

00:06:31.990 --> 00:06:32.432
It was funny.

00:06:32.432 --> 00:06:40.829
I moved to the carry area and started swimming attack and we were swimming for a couple of weeks, maybe a month, and didn't realize that we swam together growing up.

00:06:40.829 --> 00:06:43.297
So that was a fun revelation.

00:06:43.297 --> 00:06:50.600
She's great, she's always very positive and she's always encouraging people to be positive and not get too negative and she's afraid to push and challenge.

00:06:50.600 --> 00:06:54.687
She's challenged me to work on my backstroke start and sure enough, I'm making some.

00:06:54.687 --> 00:06:55.209
How's that going?

00:06:55.209 --> 00:06:55.791
You know what.

00:06:55.791 --> 00:06:59.338
We go back and forth a little bit on it, but it's fun, it's playful and you know what.

00:06:59.338 --> 00:06:59.800
And she's right.

00:06:59.800 --> 00:07:04.069
I got to change that and I'm working on it and I even tried it today in the 25 backstroke.

00:07:04.069 --> 00:07:06.105
I wouldn't say it went that great, but I tried it.

00:07:07.589 --> 00:07:17.692
Very good, my last question before I ask you the very last question what advice would you give to other swimmers that were a lead and that just are afraid to get back into masters?

00:07:17.692 --> 00:07:18.831
What advice might you give them?

00:07:19.800 --> 00:07:20.704
You know what, just start going.

00:07:20.704 --> 00:07:24.550
Really, the routine of it is, to me, what keeps me going.

00:07:24.550 --> 00:07:29.367
I mean, I try to take some time off occasionally, like weekly, but the days that I don't swim, honestly I don't feel as good.

00:07:29.367 --> 00:07:33.524
So going to swimming and being in the pool is what makes me feel good and then that's what makes me tick.

00:07:33.524 --> 00:07:37.387
But I think that you just got to get into a routine and find other reasons to be there.

00:07:38.245 --> 00:07:44.208
Okay, so you kind of answered this very last question, but I always ask everybody what does being in the water mean to you?

00:07:44.208 --> 00:07:46.949
Or what is that feeling when you're underwater or you're by yourself?

00:07:46.949 --> 00:07:49.949
What do you feel spiritually, being in the water?

00:07:50.759 --> 00:07:52.064
I couldn't really put my finger on it.

00:07:52.064 --> 00:07:58.165
When I was away from the sport I coached also, so I was in the sport but not in the water and I couldn't put my finger on it.

00:07:58.165 --> 00:08:09.709
But I really miss that time to myself, to be honest, just that alone quiet time where I can really just mull through my life and what's going on and not necessarily overanalyze, but just that quiet time to myself.

00:08:09.709 --> 00:08:13.625
Things are real simple when you've got water around you and everything's quiet so down.

00:08:13.625 --> 00:08:14.327
I love that head.

00:08:15.060 --> 00:08:18.346
That is an answer I don't think I've gotten, which is just simple.

00:08:18.346 --> 00:08:19.021
I love it.

00:08:19.021 --> 00:08:22.146
Life is simple and we need that, don't we In today's society?

00:08:22.146 --> 00:08:22.548
Yes, you do.

00:08:22.548 --> 00:08:24.807
Thank you so much for being on the show.

00:08:24.807 --> 00:08:25.702
It's a pleasure meeting you.

00:08:27.060 --> 00:08:28.865
Stay tuned for the takeaways.

00:08:29.939 --> 00:08:30.422
Did you know?

00:08:30.422 --> 00:08:41.049
Pool chemicals will strip your skin and hair of its natural oils, which will lead to dryness, itchiness, premature aging and diminish your overall quality of health.

00:08:41.049 --> 00:08:50.149

00:09:18.980 --> 00:09:20.565
And now the takeaways.

00:09:22.980 --> 00:09:34.489
Okay, Bill Weaver, obviously an elite pedigree in swimming and gets to train with Erica Braun and their friends and they swim all the way together way, way back.

00:09:34.489 --> 00:09:38.990
So we really focused on Bill, even though Erica was always encouraging him.

00:09:39.139 --> 00:09:40.513
We always got to talk about Erica.

00:09:40.513 --> 00:09:41.340
She's part of her program.

00:09:41.340 --> 00:09:41.642
Yeah, we do.

00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:44.264
We've got to say Erica Braun.

00:09:44.264 --> 00:09:52.089
It was such a great thing that Erica introduced me to Bill to get to interview him, because he was not on my radar.

00:09:52.089 --> 00:09:54.967
We had many takeaways on this one, but what was your first?

00:09:55.129 --> 00:09:55.188
one.

00:09:55.188 --> 00:09:57.506
There were so much in there, as you said.

00:09:57.506 --> 00:10:06.684
But I think the thing that sort of hit me in the gut the most because I've experienced this as well is that he said things are simple when you have water all around you.

00:10:06.684 --> 00:10:07.601
That was his.

00:10:07.601 --> 00:10:10.905
What does swimming mean to you spiritually, or how do you feel when you dive in the water?

00:10:10.905 --> 00:10:11.783
That was the response.

00:10:11.783 --> 00:10:15.750
He said I love the alone, the quiet time.

00:10:15.750 --> 00:10:18.628
Things are simple when you have water all around.

00:10:18.628 --> 00:10:19.551
I think that's so true.

00:10:19.551 --> 00:10:23.368
The world is so busy, you're always impacted, but when you're just in the water, there's nothing.

00:10:23.368 --> 00:10:26.207
Nobody's talking to you, you're just to you in the water.

00:10:26.207 --> 00:10:28.645
I thought that was beautiful and I've experienced that swimming as well.

00:10:29.500 --> 00:10:31.668
Yes, the old sensory deprivation.

00:10:31.740 --> 00:10:32.683
Yes, that's what it is.

00:10:33.902 --> 00:10:36.529
It really can work in your favor when you need it.

00:10:36.529 --> 00:10:39.590
And sometimes, if you don't want to hear your thoughts, you hear them.

00:10:39.590 --> 00:10:42.509
So it's a ruthless truth is there.

00:10:42.509 --> 00:10:53.326
But that was a great takeaway and I loved when he said the chase is the fun part, because I would say it's kind of like the journey, not the destination all that.

00:10:53.419 --> 00:10:54.302
It's so true.

00:10:54.302 --> 00:11:04.504
What gets you up in the morning is the chase, and almost the weight of gold was that documentary that Michael Phelps did that once you hit that goal, it can be a problem.

00:11:04.504 --> 00:11:07.328
Yeah, they get up and go after things.

00:11:07.328 --> 00:11:16.325
So the chase really is the fun part, and I'm just going to add real quick that I would love to see more people who were elite swimmers get back at his swimming.

00:11:16.325 --> 00:11:18.427
And I said what would you tell him?

00:11:18.500 --> 00:11:20.587
And he said just do it, get out of your head.

00:11:20.587 --> 00:11:23.908
Stop comparing yourself to your previous champion self.

00:11:23.908 --> 00:11:24.751
Yeah, absolutely.

00:11:24.932 --> 00:11:25.673
Yeah, yeah.

00:11:25.673 --> 00:11:29.028
So it was great and so glad we got to have Bill on the show.

00:11:29.028 --> 00:11:31.583
And thanks, eric, I thought that was great.

00:11:31.583 --> 00:11:34.245
All right, another great one, ray, I love you.

00:11:34.245 --> 00:11:35.008
Love you too.

00:11:35.008 --> 00:11:35.369
Bye-bye.
